Inspiring AI Projects: Cheating death, bringing music to the masses & inventing a new sport
At Anyline, we’re working on new and exciting ways to bring our mobile scanning to the world. And nothing keeps us on our toes like finding other AI innovators out there who are pushing the perimeters of possibility.
Here are our 3 favorite AI projects that are inspiring us this week!
1. Deep learning can predict risks of premature death
In our last blog, we highlighted three stories on how AI will soon be helping blind people live more independent lives, how diagnosing and treating strokes will soon be faster and more accurate, saving countless lives and how AI could lead to a job market with fair chances for everyone in the future.
But prevention is always better than the cure, and scientists at the University of Nottingham might be on the verge of a huge step forward for predicting signs of chronic illnesses which lead to premature deaths, before they happen.
Using data from over half a million people in the UK aged between 40 and 69, their project has developed machine learning algorithms which could be used to predict health risks among middle-aged people.
The result? Dr Wang says their machine-learned algorithms were “significantly more accurate in predicting death than the standard prediction models developed by a human expert.” Read more here.
2. Music you love, before you’ve even heard it?
Nothing makes you feel old like hearing the new ‘music’ the kids are listening to…of course, in our day, things were simpler: one band would make it big, and a hundred copycat bands would appear as the industry tried to play catchup with the latest trends.
But what if we could predict the next big thing before it crashes onto the airwaves and breaks the internet?
That’s what Viberate are working on already. These Slovenian blockchain wizards are ‘collecting and analyzing billions of data points daily’ in order to predict the latest trends – and even tell us what music we will like, before we even push play.
It’s been described as an IMDb for music, bringing together the ‘largest curated and crowdsourced database’, where you can find not just new artists, but also venues, events, agencies and much more.
They’ve already made friends in high places, signing partnerships with the International Dance Music Awards and the biggest names in ticket selling, including Ticketmaster, Skiddle, Eventbrite and Eventim. So what’s next? A relaunch of their website, which they hope will revolutionize how we choose our new jam. Watch this space…
3. Speedgate: A sport invented by AI
Did you ever see the video of the Toyota Robot that plays the violin?
It’s a strange and frankly unsettling experience…somehow the poor little guy plays every note perfectly, and yet, something is missing…a bit of soul perhaps?
The same question comes to mind with the launch of Speedgate – the ‘world’s first sport imagined by AI.’ Can a computer-generated game ever inspire the same passion, spirit and emotional high of sports created by mere humans?
I have to admit, this actually looks pretty cool!
Like all the best ideas, the Speedgate team started by asking the right questions. Could they make a sport which was 1) fun and easy to learn, 2) accessible to all athletes and 3) a great workout?
After analyzing over 400 sports, bending and breaking 7,300 rules, endless testing, and the secret ingredient of feedback from some flesh and blood human beings, Speedgate emerged!
Data + Algorithms + Humans.
