New Data: 1 in 7 U.S. Tires Checked During National TireSafety Week Was Unsafe

Nationwide inspection data from Anyline’s TireBuddy shows 15% of tires below the safe tread depth threshold, and the real number on U.S. roads is likely higher.

VIENNA — July 9, 2026 — Roughly one in seven tires inspected across the United States during National Tire Safety Week (June 29 to July 5, 2026) fell below the safe tread depth threshold of 3/32 of an inch, according to new data from AI mobile data capture company Anyline. The data is drawn from all tire inspections processed nationwide through Anyline’s TireBuddy by professional customers during the week.

The finding likely understates the problem. Drivers who seek out tire inspections tend to be more safety-conscious than average, meaning the share of worn and unsafe tires across the broader driving population is almost certainly higher.

Key findings

15% of tires inspected nationwide during National Tire Safety Week measured below 3/32 of an inch of tread depth, the point at which wet braking and hydroplaning resistance degrade sharply.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, roughly 11,000 tire-related crashes occur in the U.S. each year, many involving tires that showed no obvious signs of failure beforehand.

National Tire Safety Week, an annual industry campaign, exists to close this awareness gap: worn tires are among the most preventable causes of road accidents in the United States, yet tread depth degrades gradually and rarely announces itself.

Putting the data into drivers’ hands

On July 2, 2026, Giti Tire, in partnership with Anyline, hosted a free tire inspection event at its North American headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina. Every driver received an AI-powered tread depth assessment through Anyline’s TireBuddy App, combined with an air pressure check, with both results delivered on the spot as a single, visual report.

We believe tire maintenance education is most effective when it's personal. Providing drivers with a tread scan and air pressure reading for their own tires brings tire maintenance messages to life in a way that's meaningful and actionable

William Estupinan

Vice President of Technical Service at Giti Tire

Road safety is built from small, routine decisions, and few are overlooked as tire condition. National Tire Safety Week brings that risk into focus and reminds drivers how much a simple check can reveal. Our role is behind the scenes: giving the technicians who carry out inspections a more accurate, consistent way to measure tread depth. Precision like that is what safer roads are built on

Christoph Braunsberger

Chief Executive Officer of Anyline

For drivers, the takeaway is simple: regular tire checks are one of the most direct ways to stay safe on the road. The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association recommends checking tires at least every two months.
